The Udayagiri and Khandagiri Caves, located near Bhubaneswar in the Indian state of Odisha, are ancient rock-cut caves and archaeological sites dating back to the 2nd century BCE. These caves hold immense historical, cultural, and architectural significance and are renowned for their intricate carvings, inscriptions, and religious symbolism.

The Udayagiri and Khandagiri Caves are situated on two adjacent hills, Udayagiri and Khandagiri, respectively, and together form one of the most important and well-preserved rock-cut cave complexes in India. The caves were created as residential cells for Jain monks and ascetics during the reign of King Kharavela of the Kalinga dynasty.

The Udayagiri Caves, meaning "Sunrise Hill," comprise 18 caves, while the Khandagiri Caves, meaning "Broken Hill," consist of 15 caves. Each cave is uniquely carved and decorated with sculptures, reliefs, and inscriptions depicting various scenes from Jain mythology, as well as images of Jain Tirthankaras (spiritual teachers) and other deities.

The caves also feature elaborate architectural elements such as pillared verandas, ornate facades, and rock-cut motifs, reflecting the artistic and sculptural prowess of ancient Odisha. Visitors to the Udayagiri and Khandagiri Caves can explore the caves' labyrinthine passages, marvel at the intricate carvings, and admire the panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.

In addition to their historical and architectural significance, the Udayagiri and Khandagiri Caves are important pilgrimage sites for Jains and attract scholars, historians, and tourists interested in India's rich cultural heritage. The caves offer a glimpse into the religious and social practices of ancient Jain communities and provide valuable insights into the region's past.

Today, the Udayagiri and Khandagiri Caves are protected heritage sites maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and are open to the public for exploration and study. They stand as enduring testaments to the legacy of Jainism in Odisha and serve as reminders of the rich cultural tapestry of the Indian subcontinent.
