Golden Temple

Sri Harmandir Sahib temple is called the Golden Temple, which literally means 'The Temple of Gold'. It is one of the most prominent Gurudwaras of the Sikhs in the city of Amritsar in Punjab. Harmandir Sahib was designed by the fifth Sikh Guru, Guru Arja. It is also the home of the Akal Takht. 

The Golden Temple was constructed as a worship place for both men and women from all religions and sects. The temple has four entrances to enter. Nearly 1,00,000 people visit the temple every day! The Langar or the free community kitchen at the Golden Temple is the hallmark of all Sikh Gurudwaras. Maharaja Ranjit Singh had all upper floors of the Gurudwara covered with Gold. The Golden Temple was attacked by the Afghans in the mid-18th century. The temple is an exquisite example of Sikh architecture. The Gurudwara is surrounded by a sarovar, which is a large lake and is considered to be sacred, being filled with holy water, Amrit. The lake is fed by the Rover Ravi. Three holy trees adorn the temple complex and are associated with the history of the saints.
