The Batasia Loop is an important landmark of Darjeeling and a definite must-visit for tourists! The word 'batasia' means a spacious airy region. True to its name, Batasia Loop is a huge area comprising of gardens that are beautified with flowers, grass, and shrubs. The toy train from Darjeeling passes through the Batasia Loop, which offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. Not to be missed are the picturesque views of the Darjeeling town, the snow covered Himalayan Peaks including the Kanchenjunga! Visitors can sit comfortable in the garden and enjoy watching the whistling toy train as it navigates a beautiful double loop. The loop was planned way back in 1919 as an engineering aid to help the toy train navigate the steep gradient falling 140 feet! A masterpiece of engineering indeed! The War Memorial at the centre, the Eco-Garden and the market are other important attractions of the loop.
