Hemis National Park

Hemis National Park, located in the eastern part of Ladakh in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, is one of the largest national parks in India. Established in 1981, it covers an area of about 4,400 square kilometers and is known for its diverse wildlife and stunning landscapes. The park is named after the Hemis Monastery, a famous Buddhist monastery situated within its boundaries.

The park is particularly renowned for being a habitat for the elusive snow leopard, which is one of the rarest and most endangered big cats in the world. Apart from snow leopards, Hemis National Park is home to other species such as the Tibetan wolf, Eurasian brown bear, red fox, Himalayan marmot, and several species of birds including the golden eagle and lammergeier. The best time to visit the park for wildlife sightings is during the winter months when the snow leopards descend to lower altitudes in search of prey. However, the park is only accessible to tourists from May to October due to heavy snowfall during the winter season. Visitors can explore the park through guided treks and wildlife safaris, allowing them to experience the unique biodiversity and breathtaking landscapes of the Himalayan region.
