The Sanjay Gandhi National Park, formerly called 'Borivali National Park' was eastablished in 1942 and is spread across an area of 40.09 square miles. The park is famous as an important wildlife haven and is one of the most visited national parks with more than 2 million tourists visiting the park every year.

The Sanjay Gandhi National Park is surrounded on three sides by Mumbai city. Within the park are located 2400 year old Kanheri Caves, which are rock-cut caves of basalt and were important centers of Buddhism. As many as 1,000 species of plants, 251 species of birds, 40 species of mammals, and 50,000 species of insects are found in the park. The floral species include the Kadamba Tree, Shisam, Flame of the Forest, Karanj, and Teak. A beautiful flower called Karvi is also found that flowers once in seven years! Animals such as Spotted Deer, Barking Deer, Porcupine, Striped Hyena, Grey Langur, etc are found in the national park.
