Bir Shikargah Wildlife Sanctuary
Bir Shikargah Wildlife Sanctuary. Nestled in the Panchkula district of Haryana, India, the Bir Shikargah Wildlife Sanctuary is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. Officially notified as a Wildlife Sanctuary on May 29, 1987, by the Forests Department of Haryana, this sanctuary spans an impressive 767.30 hectares (1,896.0 acres).
The sanctuary is not only a vital part of the region's biodiversity but also plays a crucial role in the conservation of vultures, housing the Vulture Conservation and Breeding Centre, Pinjore. The importance of this sanctuary was further recognized in 2009 when the Government of India declared it an Eco-sensitive Zone (ESZ), ensuring that development is restricted within a 5-kilometer radius to protect its fragile ecosystems.
The wildlife here is diverse, with species such as the Indian leopard, Asiatic elephant, chital (spotted deer), sambar deer, wild boar, rhesus macaque, gray langur, striped hyena, Indian jackal, jungle cat, Indian gray mongoose, and Indian fox roaming freely. These species often migrate between Bir Shikargah and the nearby Khol Hi-Raitan Wildlife Sanctuary, as well as the Kalesar National Park, all of which lie within the Shivalik hills of Haryana.
For those planning a visit, the sanctuary is conveniently located near various attractions and is easily accessible from major cities like Chandigarh, which is approximately 30 kilometers away. With its rich flora and fauna, the Bir Shikargah Wildlife Sanctuary offers a glimpse into the subcontinent's wildlife and serves as a reminder of the importance of conservation efforts in preserving our natural heritage.
