Dachigam National Park

The Dachigam National Park is situated about twenty-two kilometers away from Srinagar. The literal meaning of 'Dachigam' is 'Ten Villages'. The park was established in 1981. The main purpose of the park, initially was to provide clean drinking water for the people of Srinagar by the Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir.

The Dachigam National Park is situated at an elevation varying between 5500 feet and 14,000 feet in the Zabarwan range of the Western Himalayas. The terrain comprises of sloppy grasslands and sharp cliffs. Coniferous forests form a majority of the vegetation inside the park. Pastures, meadows, and waterfalls are also found in between. The Marsar Lake is found inside the park and is an important landmark. The lake is known for its population of fish. The most famous faunal species of the Dachigam is the Hangul, the Kashmir Stag. Other animals found inside the park include theHimalayan Black Bear, Jackal, Leopard, Musk Deer, Hill Fox, Himalayan Grey Langur, etc.

The best time to visit the Dachigam National Park is during the months October and November. The park is closed from January to April. The park is a treasure trove of wildlife and is a must visit. The park, nestled in the lap of the mighty Himalayas is a paradise unexplored!
