The Brihadeeswara Temple is situated in Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu. It is also called Raja Rajeswara Temple. The architect and engineer of the ancient temple, as evident from the inscriptions, is Raja Raja Rama. The perimeter of the upper story displays exquisite sculptural art portraying the postures of Bharatnatyam - the ancient Indian classical dance form that originated in Tamil Nadu. The temple bears testimony to the wealth, power, and artistic prowess of the Chola kingdom rulers.
