The Brihadeeswara Temple is situated in Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu. It is also called Raja Rajeswara Temple. It is considered to be one of India's largest temples and is an exquisite specimen of the Dravidian architectural style. It was built by Raja Raja Chola I and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, being considered one amongst the great living Cholatemples. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva.

The temple has the distinction of having the highest temple tower - the vimanam, which is 198 feet high. A huge monolithic Idol of Nandi is situated at the entrance and weighs 20 tonnes. It is considered the second largest Nandi statue in the country. The temple is made of granite and is a marvel of ancient engineering. It was constructed in the 10th century A.D. The architect and engineer of the ancient temple, as evident from the inscriptions, is Raja Raja Rama. The perimeter of the upper story displays exquisite sculptural art portraying the postures of Bharatnatyam - the ancient Indian classical dance form that originated in Tamil Nadu. The temple bears testimony to the wealth, power, and artistic prowess of the Chola kingdom rulers.

There is no entry for admission to the temple. Also, there is no fee for still photography and video graphs with handheld camera devices.
