Periyar National Park

The Periyar National Park is located in the state Kerala near Thekkady. It is governed by the Forest Department of Kerala. The Periyar National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary is spread across a huge area. The park is home to several species of endangered and rare flora and fauna.

The major sources of water in the forest are the Periyar and Pamba. The park is also called the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary. It is situated in the Cardamom Hills and the Pandalam Hills. Kochi is the nearest town. The park was established in the year 1982. The Periyar National Park is both a Tiger Reserve as well as an Elephant Reserve. The Periyar National Park is home to Lion-tailed Macaques, Tigers, Leopards, and Indian Bison. It is also popular for the fun boat rides. The park is considered one of the most protected areas for elephants and tigers. It is one of the most renowned national parks of South India, which is by nature, a dense tropical evergreen forest so thick even sunlight cannot penetrate its tree cover.

The best time to visit the Periyar National Park is from October to June.
