The Mysore Zoo is officially called Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens and is situated near the Mysore Palace. The Mysore Zoo is spread over a vast area of 157 acres and is one the oldest zoological gardens in the country. The Mysore Zoo was established in the year 1892 by Maharaja Sri Chamaraja Wodeyar and was called 'The Palace Zoo'. In 1902, it was opened to the general public.

The Mysore Zoo is maintained by the Zoo Authority of Karnataka. Inside the zoo is a beautiful lake called the Karanji Lake. The catchment of the lake is formed by the Chamunda hills. There is also a natural history museum inside the zoo. It is here that the visitors can study the natural history of aquatic birds and wild animals. There are five green anacondas in the Mysore Zoo, which have been brought from Colombo Zoo. There are also Zebras, Tigers, Baboons, Giraffes, Lions, and White Rhinoceroses inside the Zoo.
