Nalanda University

Nalanda, located about 95 km from Patna in the state of Bihar in India was once a great center of learning from around the 7th century BCE to 1200 CE. One of India's greatest ancient universities, Nalanda attracted students from far and wide: Japan, China, Korea, Tibet, etc. as also attested by archaeological evidence. The site was later excavated when several monasteries, temples, sculptures, coins, inscriptions, and seals were found. Many of the artifacts are displayed in the Nalanda Archaeological Museum situated close to the site. Nalanda is now a major tourist attraction and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
