Bihar is a state in East India. The capital city of this state is is Patna, which is also the largest city in Bihar. The state is divided by the river Ganges, the sacred river of the Hindus. Bihar, once called Magadha, was a great center of learning, the capital of the Mauryan dynasty of ancient India. The Buddha obtained enlightenment in the ancient city of Gaya in Bihar.

Bihar is the country's second largest producer of fruits. The famous mines of 'Dhanbad' too adorn the state. It is believed that the name 'Bihar' is derived from 'Vihara'; a monastery. The celebrated Nalanda University of ancient India was located in Bihar. The state is also a wildlife haven with numerous species in residence; tigers, bears, deer, peacock, pheasant, etc.

Nalanda was once one of the world’s greatest universities; today, Nalanda is a famous tourist destination. The ruins, even today, narrate the saga of the forgotten times. Vaishali is an important archaeological site in Bihar regarded as the birthplace of the 24th Jain Tirthankar, Lord Mahavira. The town is also associated with the Ashokan Lion Pillar. Patna is the ancient metropolis of Patliputra, also the birthplace of the last Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh. Pawapuri is an important Jain pilgrimage site where, it is believed, Lord Mahavira breathed His last.
