The India Gate was originally called the All India War Memorial. It is a war memorial situated in New Delhi, India. The India Gate pays tribute to the 70,000 soldiers of India who fought for the British Army and laid their lives during the first world war. The structure was designed by Edwin Lutyens. India Gate is situated in the heart of the city of New Delhi. The structure is considered one of India’s largest war memorials.
The 'Amar Jawan Jyoti' or the flame of the immortal soldier serves as India's tomb of the unknown soldier. It consists of a plinth of black marble with a reversed rifle, which is covered by a war helmet and is surrounded by four eternal flames. The India Gate is a major tourist attraction and is closed to vehicular traffic. The parade of the Republic Day starts from the Rashtrapati Bhawan and passes by the India Gate. The gate is illuminated each evening by floodlights from 07:00pm to 09:30pm. The India Gate is a 42 meter tall imposing structure and stands on a Red Bharatpur Stone base.
Entry to the India Gate is free and the structure is open from morning to night. There are no photography charges.
