Jama Masjid
The Jama Masjid is one of India's largest mosques and is located in the capital of India - New Delhi. The Masjid is an example of the Islamic architectural style. The Jama Masjid has a length of 130 feet and houses two minarets, which tower at 135 feet. The Jama Masjid is constructed in Marble and Red Sandstone. The minarets of the mosque have five stories. The first three stories are built in Red Sandstone, the fourth one is built in marble and the fifth one is built of Sandstone.
The Jama Masjid was constructed by Shah Jahan, the Mughal Emperor in the 17th century. The Masjid has three gates and can house approximately 25,000 people! On the terrace of the Jama Masjid are three domes that look exquisitely beautiful. The Masjid was inaugurated by an Imam who was invited from Bukhara. The literal meaning of 'Jama' is Friday. The floor plan of the Jama Masjid resembles the floor plan of Agra's Jama Masjid.
