The Kalighat Kali Temple is a beautiful temple located in the state of West Bengal in India. It is dedicated to Goddess Kali and is considered one amongst the 51 sacred Shaktipeethas. The temple finds mentions in the 15th century Mansar Bhasan. Coins of the ancient Gupta rulers too have been recovered from the site, confirming its antiquity. The idol of the Goddess is unique in that it has three eyes, a long tongue made of gold and four hands also made in gold. It is said that the name 'Calcutta' is derived from 'Kalighat', the sacred ghat of Kali, located on the banks of the Adi Ganga, the original course of the River Hooghly.
