The structure was constructed from Red Sandstone. The Humayun's Tomb is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The complex comprises the primary tomb of Emperor Humayun and also the grave of Bega Begum, Dara Shikoh, and Hamida Begum. Graves of numerous other emperors are also found. The Charbagh or the segmented four-fold garden is typical of the Mughal garden style. The Humayun’s Tomb is situated on the bank of River Yamuna. The last Mughal Emperor, Bahadur Shah Zafar took refuge in this very fort during the first war of independence against the British in 1857.
