The Hawa Mahal is also called the 'Palace of Winds' or 'Palace of the Breeze'. It is situated in Jaipur - the pink city in the state of Rajasthan in India. The palace is built in the Rajput style of architecture and the architect was Lal Chand Ustad. The Hawa Mahal is built using red and pink sandstone. It was constructed by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh in 1799.
The Hawa Mahal is inspired by the Khetri Mahal. The five-storied structure resembles a beehive's honeycomb. There are as many as nine hundred and fifty three small windows, which are called Jharokhas. These exhibit beautiful and intricate jaali or lattice art. The Hawa Mahal was intended for the royal ladies to have glimpses of the everyday life without them being seen by the public. The important features of Hawa Mahal are: arched roofs, small casements, and stone carved screens. The Hawa Mahal is a pyramid shaped building. An archaeological museum is located in the palace compound. The Hawa Mahal was the favorite retreat palace of Maharaja Jai Singh due to its cooling effect, which was produced by the passing breeze through the small windows. The cooling phenomenon was intensified by the fountains present inside.
