Jaigarh Fort
The Jaigarh Fort is located in Jaipur - India's Pink City in the state of Rajasthan. The majestic fort is situated on the 'Hill of the Eagles' or the 'Cheel ka Teela' as it is locally called. The fort was constructed in 1726 by Jai Singh II and served to protect the Amber Palace. The fort is named after him. The Jaigarh fort is located about 10 km from the city of Jaipur.
The Jaigarh Fort is also called the 'Victory Fort'. The fort is most famous for the 'Jaivana' cannon, which was manufactured in the precincts of the fort itself. The Jaivana had the distinction of being the world's largest cannon on wheels in its time. The Jaigarh Fort and Amber Palace are connected through underground tunnels and passages. The Jaigarh fort is situated on the peaks of the Aravalis, at an elevation of about 400 above the Amber Palace, to which the former afforded protection. The fort housed one of the world's major cannon foundries on account of its proximity to iron ore deposits. The Jaigarh fort is also known for its extensive water harvesting system. A vast network of canals collect water from the surrounding areas, diverting them to huge underground 'Tankas' or cisterns inside the fort.
